Kempinski Hotel, Jakarta
In early May 2017, I made a 2 days business trip to Jakarta before the Vesak Day holidays. This is my first trip to Jakarta after 2 years. I used to stay in Grand Hyatt on my previous visits. This time, I decided to check out the Kempinski Hotel which is opposite Grand Hyatt.
My assistant has arranged with the hotel for an airport pickup by the Silver Bird taxi. We were promptly met after we exited the security area. The ride to the hotel from the airport during mid- day non- peak was about 45mins.
The room at the Kempinski was quite big. Modern contemporary deco. Besides a writing desk, it has an armchair at the corner of the room, but the chair is not really that comfortable. My colleague noticed that the ceiling of her room had a strip of mirror and was very uncomfortable with it. I did not notice the mirror but she said that she saw it in my room too. I have stayed in so many hotels that I frankly stop noticing a lot of things…??
There is a large glass panel in the room that looks into the bathroom. There are wooden blinds in the bathroom for privacy. The bathroom has a bathtub and a shower cubicle. It was relatively large in size.
Kempinski Hotel is part of the Grand Indonesia complex, a mega commercial complex in the city centre of Jakarta. The complex consists of Grand Indonesia Shopping Mall, Menara BCA (BCA Tower), Kempinski Private Residences and Hotel Indonesia. In January 2017, Forbes recognized Grand Indonesia Shopping Town as one of the top five shopping malls in Jakarta. There is thus lots of eating options around and so I’m only ate breakfast at the hotel and had my other meals in the shopping mall.
I felt that the breakfast at the hotel was not very good. They do have Japanese, local and western choices, but it was not very good. I had some fried noodles and rice and some local dishes but the taste was just so so. The chicken porridge here is suppose to be very good, but they had already run out of it when my colleague who came down a little later wanted some. I had previously stayed at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta, which is across the road, and thought the breakfast at the Grand Hyatt was better.
My colleague has asked to borrow an iPhone charging cable as she forgot to bring hers. The Conceirge said that they had run out and had only one left and requested that she leave her phone with them at the counter for charging and come back for it later. This is really unusual and of course she did not leave her phone with them. She left it with me in my room instead.
Overall, it was an ok stay. Nothing special. I had requested for late check out at 2pm, but my request was declined as they were apparently fully booked. This is really quite unusual as most hotels do try to accommodate such requests. Stay here would have been better if breakfast as better. The only reason why I will stay here is again is probably its proximity to Grand Indonesia. I much prefer the Grand Hyatt across the road.
