Staycation in Singapore – Shangri La Hotel

Staycation @ Shangri La Hotel

I had a free voucher for a night stay at a Tower Deluxe Room in Shangri La Hotel in Singapore.  So we decided to do a weekend staycation in Aug 2016 after the National Day weekend.

We arrived at around 2pm and the check in queue was long.  The guy in front of me said that he had been waiting for 15 mins!  There was only one guy handling check in when I arrived.  Luckily 2 others came out later and things speed up a little. I was frankly disappointed at such service.  I have stayed at many other Shangri Las in other countries, and had never been made to made more than a min or two.

We were given room 1132 in the tower wing aka the old wing.  While their lobby remains grand and beautiful, the room is a far cry.  The room is really dated in design.  Frankly, my room and bathroom at home is more modern and have better fittings.     The bathroom is tiled with mosaic and does not even have a rain shower.  Even I have that at home now.

DH commented that he is disappointed at the quality of the room. I think Shangri La has lost it. It is really no longer the high end luxurious hotel that we all expect. I feel that this is the case not only for the Shangri La in Singapore but in several other Shangri Las that we had stayed in. They need to spend some money to upgrade their rooms.

We had made a reservation for dinner that night at the Waterfall, The Italian restaurant in Shangrila that serves Southern Italian food.  We had originally thought of eating at The Line, the buffet restaurant, but didn’t think it was worth paying $92++ per pax for it.

The Waterfall is located at the ground floor of the Garden Wing near the pool and gym and next to the Chi Spa.  It is a casual restaurant with a show kitchen that you will pass when you enter.  Well as casual as you can get at a Shangri La, I suppose.  It is definitely not a Pizza Hut or Pepperoni Pizzaria.

We were seated immediately when we arrived.  The speciality that day was the Hokkaido Tuna that just came in that morning.  I had to try that!

I order the tuna, DH went for the tenderloin and DD went for the squid ink pasta.  The boys wanted 2 mains each.  Both ordered a pasta each and they shared the T-bone steak which was meant for 2.  We did not order any appetitser.

We did however order desserts.  We couldn’t resist it.  Among us, we had the chocolate lava cake, profiteroles and the tiramisu.  The profiteroles were served in a very interesting manner.  It was covered by a chocolate dome and hot chocolate was poured over the dome at our table.  The chocolate melted and tada….your profiteroles were under it, now coated with delicious thick chocolate.  We weren’t expecting it.  Otherwise, I’d have taken a video of it!  Anyway, the desserts were yummy!

Our total bill came up to SGD300.  Definitely cheaper than eating at the Line.  We enjoyed our dinner.  Food was of good quality and service was excellent. We’ll definitely come back in future.  I notice that they have a nice private room too.  So this is going to be another nice place for a business lunch.  Frankly, it was not really that expensive if you don’t order dessert.  The dessert average SGD15 each.  And oh, our bill included beer and a glass of wine for DH and soft drinks and juices for the kids.
